County to stage Recycling Event and Reuse & Repair Fair

San Diego County Public Works and Environmental Health departments will hold a recycling and reuse event in Ramona on Saturday, Nov. 3.

With the exception of the Household Hazardous Waste Collection, which will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., all events and collections will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Dropoff

: County of San Diego HHW Facility, 324 Maple St.

At the Reuse & Repair Fair, area experts will provide demonstrations and information about how to reduce waste and expenses through repair and reuse:

•Home Weatherization: 1.5-hour workshop presented by Home Depot, Escondido.

•Bicycle Maintenance: Presented by Kirk’s Bike Shop, Ramona.

•Appliance Repair: Presented by Mr. Ron’s Appliance Repair, Ramona.

•Equipment Repair: Presented by Piva Equipment Repair Services, Ramona.

•Recycled Art: Presented by Tuesday Nights Artists’ Group, Ramona.

•Sewing (hand-sewn and machine demonstration): Presented by Al Rios from Pins and Needles.

•Automotive Maintenance: Improve your gas mileage and find your vehicle’s oil change interval.

•Repurpose common items: Create functional items, gifts, and art.

•Kids Activities: Including recycled arts and crafts (supplies provided) and Environscape, an interactive watershed model.

Donate reusable items to Ramona Food & Clothes Closet. Accepted items include: clothing, working electronics, furniture (no rips, stains, missing doors/legs), housewares and linens, books, toys, jewelry. Full list of items accepted is at ramonafoodandclothescloset.org/donatedmerchandise.

All donations to the Food & Clothes Closet are tax-deductible. The organization’s mission is to provide emergency supplies to individuals and families in need in Ramona, Santa Ysabel, Julian, Ranchita, Borrego Springs, and Warner Springs.

Green Monster Shredding will provide free paper shredding and destruction at the high school site.

Some restrictions apply for tire recycling, household hazardous waste, and appliance and scrap metal dropoff.

Only residential tires will be accepted. No tires with rims/wheels and no truck/business tires will be accepted. Tires must be reasonably clean of dirt, and only nine tires per vehicles are allowed.

To make arrangements for tires with rims or loads of more than nine tires, call 1-877-713-2784.

Household hazardous waste items that will be accepted include: paint, household cleaners, pool/auto/lawn chemicals, aerosols, and lighter fluid.

Other restrictions: Do not transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds at one time, containers will be limited to 5-gallon buckets, a limit of five televisions or computer monitors, and no business waste, ammunition, medications, explosives, or radioactive materials.

For appliance and metal dropoff, call 1-877-713-2784 to receive a confirmation number before the event as space is limited. Items that will be accepted for free include: scrap metals, ovens/stoves, washers, dryers, air conditioners, water heaters, dishwashers, and non-working refrigerators and freezers.

For working refrigerators and freezers, call 800-599-5792 to arrange for free pickup and a rebate.
