The Ramona 14-U girls softball team went undefeated last weekend, winning 4 games on their way to the 20th Annual Ramona Valley of the Sun All-Star Tournament at the Ramona Girls Softball fields.

In pool play, Ramona began their winning ways by beating Lakeside 9-3 and then Imperial Beach 11-4. That gave the team a No. 1 seed in the bracket round and first round bye.

In the semi-finals, Ramona came from behind in the last inning, scoring two runs and taking a one-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Ramona held the lead and beat Imperial Beach for the second time by a score of 6-5.

That moved the girls into the championship game against a solid hitting team from Menifee. The first 3 ½ innings went by quickly with a classic pitching duel and great defense. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Ramona bats came alive as they scored four runs behind key hits from Sara Whelehon, Ashley Dowers, Megan Kahler (2 RBIs), and a sacrifice fly RBI by Isabelle Ekstam. Those four runs were all they needed as Ramona pitcher Sarah Rasmussen mowed through the rest of the Menifee lineup for the final three innings and got a shut-out 4-0 win. Rasmussen struck out six batters and gave up five hits during the game.

After the game, as parents gathered to take pictures and watch the girls celebrate, they noted that the girls not only played well, but worked hard off the field to participate in the tournament. With over $4,000 needed to purchase uniforms and pay entry fees, the girls, in a team effort, raised money by hosting car washes, spaghetti dinners and 50-50 raffles.
