Standoff leads to 180 days in county jail

A 19-year-old Ramona man who held a knife against his own throat in a Feb. 12 standoff with sheriff’s deputies was sentenced May 29 to 180 days in jail for resisting an executive officer.
The projected release date for Irvin Moreno is for July 5, according to the sheriff’s department. El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin placed him on three years probation.
Moreno had been free on his own recognizance, but he missed a court appearance and was arrested again on April 18. He pleaded guilty to resisting an officer in the standoff, and a charge of biting a sheriff’s sergeant on a finger was dismissed.
The incident took place at an apartment in the 700 block of A Street. Moreno was described as suicidal and he wouldn’t allow his own family members to leave. His uncle called sheriff’s deputies around 6:38 p.m., and they were able to get a woman, two children, and the uncle out of the apartment.
The standoff lasted about two hours, but when Moreno began stabbing himself, deputies stopped him. He became combative to emergency personnel before he was taken to a hospital.
