Babysitter, 19, jailed in infant’s death
A 19-year-old Ramona man is in county jail, suspected of causing the death of 8-month-old Liliana Velasquez.
David Humberto Ortiz faces one count of murder and one count of assault on a child causing death, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit said in a news release Monday.
According to Nesbit, Ortiz was babysitting the infant at the time of her injury in the 2600 block of Southern Oak Road in Ramona at 11:27 a.m. July 4. She died at Rady Children’s Hospital about 4:35 p.m. Friday, July 6, the sheriff’s department reported.
As a result of the investigation into the infant’s death, Ortiz was arrested Monday afternoon, said Nesbit. Investigators from the Sheriff’s child abuse unit, homicide detail and crime lab are involved in the investigation.
Because of the ongoing investigation, no other information will be released at this time, said Nesbit.
According to the sheriff’s website, Ortiz will be arraigned in El Cajon Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11.
