Update: July 5, 6:40 p.m.

Sheriff’s officials remain at the scene of a shooting in the 900 block of E Street Thursday afternoon.

Deputies responding to the call found an unidentified victim lying in the ditch bleeding in front of 945 E St., said Sgt. Greg Rylaarsdam with the sheriff’s Ramona station.

The victim is white and possibly in his twenties. Paramedics took him to Palomar Medical Center.

Based on what witnesses told officers, the shooting victim may have been trying to get into 933 E St., Rylaarsdam said. It is uncertain if the victim shot himself or if he was shot. Officers found a black semiautomatic handgun close to where the victim was found, said Rylaarsdam.

At least two men and one woman went voluntarily to the sheriff’s Ramona station to give statements and be interviewed, he said, noting that no one has been arrested.

“We’re trying to put everything together,” he said.

Detective Lori-Ann Wells is in charge of the investigation.
