Students beat staff in fundraising soccer match

Ramona High School’s boys and girls soccer teams were the winners in their indoor game against Ramona High School staff members in the school’s gym last Monday.

The varsity won the game by an 8-5 score, and the event raised approximately $300, which will be split between the boys and girls programs.

“It went well,” said boys head coach Michael Jordan. “It was a good night.”

A running clock was used for the four 15-minute quarters. The girls played the first and third quarters while the boys played the second and fourth quarters.

Because Ramona’s soccer coaches, including assistant and lower-level coaches, played for the staff, the team captains coached the varsity.

“A lot of people had a lot of fun,” Jordan said.

The match utilized the 6-on-6 format of indoor soccer with five field players and a goalkeeper on each side.

“By the time the fourth quarter rolled around they still had varsity guys who hadn’t played yet,” Jordan said.

That meant that the varsity players were fresh while the staff, who led by a 5-4 margin at the end of the third period, were starting to fatigue. “Most of us played considerable minutes,” Jordan said.

The Bulldog boys host Westview in a Palomar League match on Jan. 19.
