The Bulldog boys varsity basketball team finished pre-league action by beating Carlsbad High School and dropping non-league tilts to Del Norte High School and Fallbrook High School. The Dawgs are now 7-9 on the season.

Coach David Reichner was elated when his Bulldogs beat his alma mater, Carlsbad High School, 60-53 to win their first game of 2012.

“With tonight’s win the boys proved to themselves that they can compete with the best by playing good team defense, crashing the boards and taking care of the ball while executing the offense,” said Reichner.

Ramona dominated the boards at both ends of the court as they out-rebounded the Lancers 42-22.

Jonathan Schirer had another stellar effort. The senior forward scored a season high 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double.

Kwayde Miller earned the Chairman of the Boards honor by grabbing 12 boards and scoring 12 points to also record a double-double. In addition, Travis Stevens registered double digits in the the rebound department as he had 10 boards.

Reichner said he believes that the team can improve on its turnovers.

“We had 17 and need to improve on that number,” he said, adding that is way down from 29 in their first game, showing that the Dawgs are improving.

Chris Durham scored in double digits with 11 points and grabbed eight boards. Stevens and Matt Lawler contributed four points apiece to the offense.

Ramona dropped a 60-40 decision to Del Norte High School in a North County Conference cross league game. Schirer led the Dawgs with 12 points on a night when the Bulldog offense could not fire on all cylinders. No other Dawg scored in double figures.

Miller and Durham shared the rebounding honors with eight boards apiece. Stevens grabbed six rebounds. Miller (6), Ryan Heiar (2), Zach White (5), Lawler (2) and Stevens (4) also scored in the game.

The Fallbrook Warriors invaded the Dawg House and beat the Bulldogs 70-52. The Warriors got out to a fast start and led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and went on to outscore the Dawgs in every quarter in the game.

Schirer, Durham and Miller all scored in double figures but that was not enough offense to beat the Warriors.

Schirer scored 16 points with two 3-point goals and six rebounds. Schirer also blocked three shots. Durham scored 12 points. Miller contributed 12 points to the offense and grabbed five boards.

Travis Stevens had three sevens. The senior guard scored 7 points, led the team with seven boards and contributed seven assists to the offense. Heiar (4) and Lawler (1) also scored in the game.

The Dawgs will take a week off to get ready for Palomar League action and a run at the CIF Playoffs.
