A 32-year-old active duty Marine from Escondido died Sunday after a motorcycle crash on State Route 76.

The Marine was riding a 2007 Ducati motorcycle on westbound highway 76, just east of Red Gate Road near Palomar Mountain about 2 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

According to a witness who was traveling behind the victim, the motorcyclist tried to make a right hand turn at a curve with a speed limit of 25 mph while going about 40 mph. The driver continued straight into the curve while his motorcycle slid out from under him, Bettencourt said.

He was ejected from his bike and crashed into a metal guard rail.

Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene. Drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor, he said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
