Girls basketball team makes it to CIF playoffs

Ramona High’s girls played well in the their final two regular season basketball games but dropped Palomar League decisions to Mt. Carmel and Torrey Pines in the Dawg House. The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 13-13 record and were 2-8 in their final season in the Palomar League.

For their efforts the Lady Bulldog basketball team received a ninth seed in the Division II CIF playoffs and will travel to Bonita Vista High School for a Wednesday night game at 7.

Ramona gave the Palomar League champions Mt. Carmel Sundevils (23-5, 9-1) all they could handle in a 56-47 home court loss.

The Lady Dawgs led after one period and into the second quarter but the Sundevils had too many weapons. The Sundevils had three players score in double figures and played their trademark tough person-to-person defense.

Ramona’s Kim Whelehon and RaeAnne VanTol scored in double figures. Both seniors are recovering from injuries and getting ready for playoffs.

Whelehon led Ramona with 17 points as she battled an injury on her shooting wrist. She hit two from the three point stripe. VanTol recorded another double. The senior post player scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Paige Conroy crashed the boards from her guard position and grabbed eight rebounds and scored four points. Katherine Mauldin and Ashlyn Savage came off the bench and played well. Mauldin had four points and three boards and Savage scored two points and grabbed two rebounds. Kailey Hill (2), Tiana Zuniga (1) and Megan Buckley (3) also scored for the Lady Dawgs.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped their final regular season game and their final game in the Palomar League to Torrey Pines (13-14, 4-6) 50-44 before a Senior Night crowd.

Whelehon led all scorers with 14 points. She hit three from beyond the three point line. Whelehon also led all players with five steals on the defensive end of the court. Zuniga played an excellent game. She grabbed 10 boards, dished off two assists, recorded three steals had five deflections and scored nine points.

As senior guard, Conroy grabbed 10 rebounds, an assist and scored eight points. On defense she had three steals, a blocked shot and a deflection. VanTol had eight rebounds and 8 points with three assists and two steals. Katherine Mauldin scored 3 points and grabbed two rebounds. Savage, Buckley, Hill and Ward played well on defense.
