Ramona High School’s girls water polo team finished the 2011-12 regular season with a 14-15 overall record.

The Bulldogs’ record was 1-9 in Palomar League play, which concluded Feb. 9. Ramona closed out the regular season with two home matches, a 5-2 loss to Westview and a 9-7 defeat against Mount Carmel.

Westview scored the first quarter’s only goal and led 3-1 when the halftime buzzer sounded.

“We let them get out a little bit early,” said Coach Donnie Williams.

The 5-2 final score was also the Wolverines’ margin of lead after the third period.

“It was a good game,” Williams said. “I thought we played solid, just like we always do with Westview. It’s just a matter of us on our offensive side being productive.”

Ramona took 28 shots against Westview in the 28 minutes of play.

“Just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Williams said.

The Wolverines defeated Ramona in a 6-4 Palomar League game Jan. 19, and two days later the two teams met in the East County Invitational tournament finals with Westview taking a 5-4 victory.

“We know we can play with them,” Williams said.

Ramona’s first-round game against Mount Carmel was a 10-6 loss Jan. 24. The Sundevils had a 6-2 halftime lead in that game. In the second-round game, Ramona led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 6-3 at halftime.

“We started off really strong,” Williams said. “The third quarter killed us.”

Ramona held on to a 7-6 lead when the buzzer sounded to end the third period. Early in the fourth quarter the Sundevils were awarded a five-meter penalty shot and converted that opportunity for a goal.

Williams noted that other officiating calls went against Ramona.

“I don’t always want to blame the ref, but they were momentum-changes,” he said. “It kind of set us back a little bit mentally.”

Mt. Carmel scored two more goals to close out the game’s offense.

“I thought we had that game, said Williams. “I was a little bit disappointed afterwards.”

The Feb. 9 game was Senior Night. The Bulldogs honored seniors Bri Hogervorst, Samy Landgrave and Bianca Virgilio.

The CIF playoff selection and seeding meeting was scheduled for Feb. 13. If the Bulldogs either earn a first-round bye or win their first-round game, they will play Saturday at La Jolla High School’s Coggan Pool.
