Ramona author to present historic images for Valley Club

Ramona author and historian Richard L. Carrico will present slides and stories from his book “Images of America: Ramona, California” at the San Vicente Valley Club’s luncheon meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

The meeting is open to the public and will be in the San Vicente Valley Inn, 24157 San Vicente Road. Guests are encouraged to make reservations at the front desk of San Vicente Inn or call Mary Jo Adamske at 760-787-1566 or 760-703-0123 by Friday, Feb. 24. The cost is $12. If a cancellation is necessary, contact Adamske.

Who were the first inhabitants of Ramona Valley thousands of years ago? Why was the town first called Nuevo? Was there really a nationally-ranked drag strip at the Ramona Airport? Who was Ramona’s famous female author of best-selling children’s books?

Carrico will answer these questions, with a slide presentation focusing on images and stories from his book. Autographed copies of the book will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Guy B. Woodward Museum.Carrico said the book is a collaborative effort between the Guy B. Woodward Museum and him.

A lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University, Carrico has written three other books, is a well-known archaeologist, and has more than 30 published academic articles. His award-winning book “Strangers in a Stolen Land: Indians of San Diego County” is used in university and college courses throughout the West.

The order of events for the meeting will be: Social time at 11 a.m., Call to order at 11:30, luncheon at noon and the program at 1 p.m.

San Vicente Valley Club is a nonprofit organization for all residents of Ramona brought together for the social, philanthropic and civic betterment of the community. It makes charitable contributions toward student scholarships and the needs of the community.

Among the club’s other interest groups are Book Marks, Bridge Marathon, Lunch Bunch, Friends of the Ramona Library and Bunco.
