Car totaled after collision with horse

A car was totaled and a horse died after a collision around 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 18, near Dye Road and Ramona Street, according to California Highway Patrol.

A San Diego Country Estates resident, with the last name of Finn, was heading home from work when a 15-year-old gelding ran out and hit the right front of Finn’s Nissan Maxima, said CHP Officer Joe Nielsen. The impact caused the horse to hit the windshield and bounce off, he reported. Although the horse walked about 50 yards from the car, he collapsed in the road and died, Nielsen said.

Finn was the only occupant in the car and was uninjured, according to the CHP officer.

“The majority of impact was on the driver’s side of the windshield,” he said. “It just totaled the car. He’s lucky to be alive.”

The horse, owned by Donna Comford on nearby Royal Vista Drive, was still wearing its blanket and somehow got outside of the property gates, said the officer.
