The Ramona Bulldog girls basketball team opened the Kiwanis Tournament with a 57-38 loss to San Marcos and the team will enter the consolation bracket of the double elimination tournament.

The Lady Dawgs are now 8-5 on the season.

Coach Dan Marshall named sophomore forward Katherine Mauldin the player of the game. Mauldin had a great game in the paint at both ends of the court as she registered a double-double. She scored a game high 19 points and grabbed a season high 22 rebounds; 11 on offense and 11 on defense. She scored seven field goals in the paint and hit five of seven from the charity stripe.

Kylee Scheib also made her presence felt in the paint. The frosh guard had 10 rebounds and scored 4 points while blocking two shots and dishing off one assist. She hit the team’s only 3 point goal.

Kailey Hill grabbed seven of her nine rebounds on the defensive end of the court as she played a solid defensive game. Hill blocked three shots. On offense Hill scored 6 points and had one assist.

The Lady Dawgs had trouble at the offensive end of the court as they only hit 24 percent of their field goal attempts and were only one for eight from 3-point land.

The girls were 15-for-28 from the free throw line. Julie Ward (2), Christina Barrameda (2), Niki Spring (3) and Mackenzie Griffin (2) also scored in the game.

The team will take the rest of the winter holidays off after the Kiwanis Tournament and resume play with two cross league games after the break, before entering Valley League competition.
