Deputies shoot pit bull, arrest man on multiple charges

Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a pit bull after it attacked them when they served a warrant in the 15000 block of Brandiron Street on Sunday, Dec. 2, according to authorities.

Just before 8 a.m., the sheriff’s department received a call of a suspicious person and two people arguing on Brandiron Street, reports the sheriff’s department. Detective Lori-Ann Wells said information also came in about an outstanding warrant for assault with a deadly weapon for Jared Smith, 24, who was at that location.

When two deputies arrived, the pit bull came outside and advanced at them, prompting them to shoot the dog, said Wells. They arrested Smith on suspicion of felon in possession of a firearm, spousal abuse, and vandalism, in addition to the outstanding warrant, said Wells.

The detective said the vandalism, estimated to be about $200, was caused when Smith allegedly tried to stop his girlfriend from leaving in a pickup truck. Smith was booked into San Diego Central Jail. He is not eligible for release on bail and faces numerous other charges, according to the San Diego County Jail website, which gave arraignment dates of Dec. 5 and 10.
