Ramona High sophomore Kara Banegas won two events during the Bulldogs’ Palomar League dual meet April 18 at Torrey Pines High School.

Banegas threw the shot put 89 feet 11 inches and the discus 35 feet 5 inches.

“That was exciting,” said Coach Sherri Edwards.

Torrey Pines won the meet by a 102-36 score, but the two teams split first place in the six field events.

Courtney Ford had a winning distance of 16 feet 1 in the long jump.

“I was really excited about that,” Edwards said.

Ramona obtained 20 of its 36 points in field events. Taylor Uekert set a personal record of 8 feet in the pole vault to take third place at the meet,

Brooke Brean was third in the high jump after clearing 4 feet 10 inches, and Claire Hagan added a third-place discus point with a throw of 82 feet 1 inch.

Ramona’s only first-place finish in a running event was in the 1,600-meter race, which took Lauren Cortez 5:28.69. Ford was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.49 seconds. Caitlyn Choy finished second in the 400-meter race at 1:00.22 while posting a third-place time of 26.60 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Ramona had second-place finishers in both hurdles events. Kelly Helman completed the 100-meter hurdles in 16.10 seconds while Carlee Roberts needed 53.00 seconds to finish the 300-meter hurdles race.

“We lost, but we had some good things happen,” Edwards said.
