Tennis team drops matches to league foes

Ramona High’s tennis team played two Palomar League foes and lost to Poway (5-9, 1-4) and Rancho Bernardo (15-4, 5-2) as the Dawgs go into the final two weeks of league play.

The Bulldogs are 9-5 on the season and 2-5 in Palomar League action.

The Bulldogs dropped a very close match to Poway 10-8 after beating the Titans in their first meeting earlier this season.

Coach Failla juggled his lineup and moved players around to give the Dawgs a better chance to win. Christian Failla left his regular spot as a singles player and joined Ricky Flores in doubles action. Failla and Flores responded by winning two sets with scores of 2-6, 7-6 and 6-3.

John Shupe and Tyler McDonald also picked up two team points by posting scores of 4-6, 6-1 and 6-2. Chad Martin and Nick Peterson played well and won one set. They lost 6-7 in a tie breaker and rallied to win a set 6-1 and then went 1-6.

In singles play Daniel Streeter went 3-6, 0-6 and 6-3 from his sport as number one singles player. Scotty Barber took a team point with scores of 6-3, 1-6 and 4-6. Garrett Wilcox also won a set with scores of 6-2, 0-6 and 4-6.

The Bulldogs lost to Rancho Bernardo 14-4. Ramona earned three team points in singles action and one in doubles play.

Streeter turned in scores of 3-6, 1-6 and took a set by going 6-1. Joey Guzzino played one set and posted a 0-6 score. Failla went 0-6 and 6-1 and Barber had scores of 0-6, 1-6 and 6-4.

In doubles action Shupe and McDonald went 3-6, 2-6 and 6-4. Martin and Peterson went 0-6, 4-6 and 2-6. Wilcox and Flores posted scores of 0-6 and 3-6. Wilcox and Jack Melleker went 0-6.
