Ramona High School’s boys volleyball team defeated Torrey Pines in a Palomar League match April 17 on the Falcons’ court.

The Bulldogs lost the first two games by 25-22 and 25-21 scores before winning the next three contests by 25-16, 25-19, and 15-9 margins.

During the match Ramona opposite hitter Travis May took 57 swings. He had 28 kills and only six hitting errors. Outside hitter Josh Plunkett had nine kills while outside hitter Josh Spieker and middle blocker Kenny Lawler had eight kills apiece. Setter Garrett Adelman led Ramona with 56 assists.

On April 19 the Bulldogs hosted Westview, which had an espn.com ranking of seventh in the nation.

“We were playing right with them,” Coach Jeff Klauda said.

Ramona lost by 25-17, 25-17, and 25-16 scores, but the Bulldogs had a small lead in the first game. The lead was erased by the same method that would give the Wolverines significant leads throughout the match.

“They’d go back and jump serve and our ball control would break down,” Klauda said. “When we were able to control the jump serve, we were playing with them.”

This year Ramona is in Division II for CIF playoff purposes. Last year the Bulldogs were in Division III. The Bulldogs and Vikings played a non-league match April 20 at La Jolla that the Vikings won in four games. Ramona led in the first game before losing by a 25-20 score.

In the second game, the Bulldogs had a sideout on game point, narrowing the score to 24-23, before La Jolla took the final point.

Ramona had a significant lead in the third game, but the Vikings came back to tie the score. The Bulldogs regained the lead and won by a 25-22 margin.

In the fourth game Ramona had leads of 17-10 and 19-15 before the Vikings scored the final 10 points.

“A guy went back and jump served out the game,” Klauda said. “We outplayed them in so many different areas. As a team we hit better than we did against Westview and Torrey Pines. It was just a lack of ball control serve-receive.”

May led the Bulldogs with 17 kills against the Vikings. Caleb Nelson had 18 digs while Adelman contributed 43 assists and 11 digs.

The loss gave Ramona an overall season record of 19-15, including a 3-3 Palomar League mark.

Senior Night will take place Thursday when the Bulldogs host Torrey Pines.
