School district seeks adult tutor volunteers in reading

Share

Ramona school district and OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information System) are seeking older adult and parent volunteers to help a child experience the joy of reading.

OASIS reading tutors are paired with students in kindergarten through third grade who need a little extra help learning to read.

The national award-winning OASIS program creates opportunities for older adults to continue their personal growth and provide a service to the community.

Those involved form priceless friendships and precious memories, said teacher Linda Ball at the district office.

“Join RUSD’s team of over 30 OASIS tutors as we celebrate our 14th year tutoring students in reading in Ramona schools,” said Ball.

To become an OASIS reading tutor, attend the free training program and commit to meeting with your assigned student at school one hour per week. The district provides the lessons, books, and materials.

The next training for tutors will be Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 20 and 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Ramona Unified School District Office Board Room, 720 Ninth St.

No teaching experience necessary—just a warm heart and a desire to help a child experience the joy of reading, said Ball.

For more information, contact Ball at 760-787-2062 or lball@ramonausd.net.
