Youngsters will get the chance to beat the pros when San Diego Sockers players are in Ramona for the Opening Day Celebration at the Ramona Soccer Arena in Collier Park on Saturday.

The event, hosted by the Ramona Branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, will be from 10 a.m. to noon in Collier Park in the 600 block of E Street.

The youth club building at 622 E St. is adjacent to the regulation-sized outdoor soccer arena at 626 E St.

The arena, a joint venture of San Diego County and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, has playable walls, artificial turf for water conservation, and energy-efficient lights for soccer league competitions in the evenings. The county designated $372,000 in neighborhood reinvestment money to the project and the youth club donated $250,000.

Although the arena’s official ribbon cutting ceremony was held in August, it featured dignitaries from the

county and youth club, was held on a weekday morning when few could attend and lacked the excitement planned for the Sept. 10 celebration. Children’s activities, free food and drinks, soccer-themed games with the San Diego Sockers, face painting, prizes and a live disc jockey are part of the family fun scheduled.

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free.

Children who attend the Ramona Boys & Girls Club have been playing in the open air arena for the past month, and Saturday’s celebration will give the public a chance to enjoy it and learn more about it.

Those attending also will have the opportunity to meet Simone McCune, the new site supervisor at the Ramona youth club.

The arena is part of the youth club and is managed by Futbol Rapido USA when the Ramona Boys & Girls Club is not open. It is available for adult and youth play. Leagues are forming, with registration and other information available at the youth club and at FutbolRapidoUSA.com, info@FutbolRapidoUSA.com and 858-836-0187.

Coed, men’s and women’s leagues will play Monday through Friday evenings, with children and youth leagues playing Saturdays and Sundays.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego operates 17 youth clubs from Borrego Springs to National City. The Ramona branch is open weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m. and offers a recreation basketball league for third- through eighth-graders from December through early March and day camps during school breaks, including summer break.

A mandatory homework hour is held for one hour each schoolday.

Annual membership of $60 per child is valid from July 1 through June 30.
