Supervisors consider two redistricting proposals today

San Diego County Board of Supervisors today will take up two new redistricting proposals designed to meet requirements of the Voting Rights Act.

The board, which has the final say over the boundaries of supervisorial districts, was poised to approve a new map earlier this summer before backing down in the face of potential legal challenges.

The map that was about to be approved was sent back to staff for adjustments, and two options will be presented to the board. They both make adjustments to the border between District 1, represented by Greg Cox, and District 4, represented by Ron Roberts.

ACLU lawyer Lori Shellenberger said staff tweaked the boundaries so they technically pass legal muster, but she was opposed to the breakup of a number of communities.

Redistricting takes place every 10 years to adjust boundaries based on updated census data.
