Water district’s public hearing on rates scheduled for Tuesday

Share

The Ramona Municipal Water District (RMWD) will hold a public hearing for proposed water and sewer rates for fiscal year 2011-12 at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Lane.

During the hearing the water board will take public input on a proposed 3 percent sewer rate increase for customers of both the Santa Maria and the San Vicente sewer service areas, a 60-cent per unit rate increase for untreated water, and an increase in the water service charge that would amount to about $7.24 bimonthly for an average family.

The rate for treated water will remain the same. A water rate study by Raftelis Financial Consultants Inc. of San Diego advised a decrease of 19-cents per unit in the general treated water rate, but the consulting firm’s recommendation of an increase of 19-cents per unit in the electrical rate offsets that reduction. An electrical rate is built in because RMWD’s water, purchased through the San Diego County Water Authority, is pumped 1,000 feet up the hill to Ramona from the district’s Poway Pump Station.

Following the hearing on Tuesday, the board is scheduled to discuss and possibly adopt the proposed rates.
