What’s happening with NJROTC

The past couple weeks have been jam-packed with important and fun events for Ramona’s NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) — starting with Sept. 17 down by Fiddlers Cove for the Neptune Olympics.

Seven cadets attended, including Lauren Barrett, Doug Barnett, Aaron Paris, Hellan Paris, Jackson Rath, Carlo Silva and Jamie Whitney. They competed in many events and took home two trophies.

Cadets Rath and Whitney placed fourth in the two-man kayak while all as a team took a second in the Zodiac Boat Paddle. A great event for all.

Hard work and having fun is what NJROTC is all about. Staying motivated and dedicated is a high priority for our unit. Both Commander Ernst and Chief Richardson always keep us pumped and ready for the next event.

Sept. 24 was our Troy physical fitness meet at Troy High school in Santa Ana: Taking an overall second out of over 30 schools, placing first in sit-ups, boat paddle, wheel barrow race, the 1200x100 relay and the 6x220 relay; taking second in the boardwalk, dizzy izzy, and rope bridge; third place in push-ups; and fourth in tug-o-war and the endurance run. It was a fun day for our entire unit to do together.

Last, but definitely not least, Oct. 4 was the installation of cadets for all incoming cadets to our unit this year. After many hours of preparation in the previous weeks, the night went on without a hitch. Leading the company was Cadet Lieutenant Commander Richardson, who marched the cadets on the field for all parents to see.

After commissioning all three platoons, a guest speaker, Mr. Smith from the senator’s office, addressed the crowd and presented all incoming cadets with certificates. Soon after a flag detail passed an American flag while Old Glory was read, then the flag was presented to the speaker by the commanding officer.

All and all it has been a GREAT start of the year for the unit. Drill team practice is going strong and we are steadily preparing for our first drill meet at La Habra High School on Nov. 19.

We look forward to making it to nationals!
