How the major stock indexes fared Thursday

Bank stocks dragged the market lower Thursday after JPMorgan Chase & Co. reported that a slowdown in investment banking hurt its results in the third quarter. An afternoon rally in technology stocks limited some of the losses.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 40.72 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 11,478.13.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 3.59, or 0.3 percent, to 1,203.66.

The technology-focused Nasdaq composite rose 15.51, or 0.6 percent, to 2,620.24.

For the week to date:

The Dow is up 375.01, or 3.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 48.20, or 4.2 percent

The Nasdaq composite is up 140.89, or 5.7 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is down 99.38 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 53.98, or 4.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 32.63, or 1.2 percent.
