Smith descendants plan October reunion picnic
Descendants of Thomas Hugh Smith and James Wilcox Smith plan to gather for an information-gathering picnic in Lindo Lake Park in Lakeside from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Many present-day area residents can trace their roots to the brothers from New York who arrived by ship to Baja California in the early 1800s. They each married Mexican women and started families that eventually spread northward from the Loreto/Comondu region to Monterey, Calif.
The stories of the migration of “Los Smith” have been the subject of several books and films, including “Last of the Californios” by Harry Crosby and “Familia” and “The Lemon Grove Incident” by Roberto R. Alvarez Jr., a Smith family member.
In addition to their own food and drink, attendees are encouraged to bring old photos, family charts and any other Smith family information that they are willing to share.
