Great Fire is 65 percent contained

— The fire is 65 percent contained, Cal Fire reports.

— The Great Fire is 60 percent contained, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler reported Monday afternoon.

Steady progress is being made by all divisions fighting the 2,000-acre wildfire east of Julian, Cal Fire reported.

Winds of 10 mph from the West are reported with gusts of 17 mph. An increase in cumulous build-up with an anticipated increase in winds is anticipated, according to Cal Fire.

Update: Monday, Oct. 3, 9 a.m.

— The Great Fire is holding at 2,000 acres and is 40 percent contained, reports Cal Fire. The cause is under investigation. No structures are threatened.

Update: Sunday, Oct. 2, 8 p.m.

— Cal Fire reports that the Great Fire is holding at 2,000 acres and is 25 percent contained. A total of 1,486 firefighters have been assigned to the fire, and the cost to fight it is estimated at $650,000.

Update: Sunday, Oct. 2, 1 p.m.

— Cal Fire has used reverse 911 to order an evacuation advisory for the following areas of Julian: Shelter Valley, Kentwood #1 and #2, Whispering Pines, Pine Crest Campground,

Banner, KQ Ranch and Harrison Park.

“This is only an advisory and the public should not panic,” Cal Fire Capt. Mike Mohler said in release issued about 12:20 p.m. “We are asking to please be prepared if asked to leave and not wait till the last minute.”

The closure of Wynola Road east of the Banner side to west of S-2 at Scissors Crossing remains in effect, said Mohler, adding “this is a hard road closure.”

As reported earlier today, the Great Fire remains at 2,000 acres and is 5 percent contained. The fire is moving in a southeast direction.

Cal Fire called for the closure of state Route 78 at Wynola Road and at Scissors Crossing on Sunday morning as it fights the Great Fire, which has grown to 2,000 acres east of Julian and is only 5 percent contained.

No structures are immediately threatened, reports Cal Fire. The fire is burning on federal Bureau of Land Management and state park land, and firefighters are constructing a hand line, dozer line and contingency lines.

The fire started Saturday about 1 p.m. near the communities of Scissors Crossing and Shelter Valley on the south side of SR-78, one-half mile from S-2. By 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Cal Fire reported that the wildfire was one-third up Granite Mountain and heading toward the Pacific Crest Trail. The incident commander ordered additional air and ground support.

By 6 p.m., the wind had shifted and the fire was burning northeast toward the desert.

Cal Fire reported Sunday morning that 1,019 firefighters are battling the wildfire.
