Ramona Pop Warner Midget Bulldawg cheerleaders have had a string of first places in competitions this season and need the community’s help to raise money to compete in the Pop Warner National Championship at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., in December.
The cheerleaders ensured they qualified for the national contest by placing first in their division at the WESCON regional championships in Long Beach on Saturday.
Now comes the hard part, coaches and parents agree. They must kick their fundraising into high gear.
Total cost for the 19 cheerleaders and six coaches to travel to and participate in the national contest tops $50,000.
“If the people of Ramona see the girls out on corners in uniform seeking funds, we ask that they please consider supporting them,” said Toby Sosbee, a Ramona Pop Warner board member and Midget cheerleader father. “The Ramona Pop Warner Board of Directors will be providing some assistance, but the brunt of the cost will be on the girls and their families.”
The competition will be televised on ESPN, noted Sosbee, adding, “How cool is that for Ramona to be highlighted in such a fashion?”
Prior to their win in Long Beach on Nov. 19, the squad placed first in cheer competition in Cox Arena at San Diego State University.
Members of the cheerleading squad are: Courtney Dillon, Courtney Doss, Michelle Eckhart, Mackenzie Haughton, Madison Haughton, Isabel Johnson, Lexi Kahler, Hannah Kent, Hannah Koppel, Kara Larson, Nicole McAnally, Kinley McKay, Alexis Morales, Mikala Morin, Kammi Nabors, Jessica Sosbee, Holly Stallman, Cassaundra Strybel and Kortni Zeigler.
The squads head coach is Marsha McKay. Assistant coaches are Kyla Brunner, Stephanie Koppel, Carla Morales and Sheila Swafford. Student demonstrator is Karis Brunner, and team parent is Jennifer Johnson.
