Homecoming crowd cheers as Bulldogs beat Titans 14-10

Ramona High School’s 14-10 football win against Poway broke a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs, gave Ramona its first win in Palomar League play this year, and provided the Bulldogs’ homecoming game fans with a victory.

“The most important element was beating a team which was ranked in the top ten in the county,” said head coach Damon Baldwin. “We did it with a very undermanned team that just played their hearts out. It was one of the most incredible football game experiences I think that Ramona has had in many years.”

The Bulldogs never trailed in the Oct. 23 game, but Poway had the ball late in the fourth quarter.

“They were driving to win it,” Baldwin said.

The Titans obtained a first down a yard away from the end zone. Ramona’s defense held Poway without a gain for three plays, and on fourth down middle linebacker Austin Goodwin sacked the quarterback.

Ramona quarterback Marco Cobian then kneeled down to run out the clock.

On the third play of the game, Cobian completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Gurrola.

“Marco had a great touchdown pass,” Baldwin said.

Gurrola added 1 more point with a conversion kick.

In the second quarter, Grady Vazquez ran for the final yard of a touchdown drive and Gurrola kicked the extra point. Poway’s touchdown was in the fourth quarter.

“We played well,” Baldwin said. “The defense has really stepped up the last two games.”

Ramona’s offense has been plagued by injuries this season, which transitioned Caleb Berman and Jalen Boykins into running back duty against the Titans.

“They both had a pretty good game,” Baldwin said.

The win improved Ramona’s overall season record to 4-4 while giving the Bulldogs a 1-2 Palomar League mark.

“It was a great game,” Baldwin said.

Rancho Bernardo will take a 6-2 overall record into Friday’s game at Ramona. It will be Senior Night for the Bulldogs.

“Looking forward to Senior Night,” Baldwin said.

All Division I teams are guaranteed a berth in the CIF playoffs, but a victory will likely earn Ramona a home playoff game.

“There’s still a lot to play for, but right now it’s just one game at a time,” Baldwin said.
