Eagle fire near Warner Springs spreads to 1,000 acres

Fire is burning away from populated areas

A brush fire being called the Eagle fire has spread to about 1,000 acres near Warner Springs and is from 5 to 10 percent contained, CalFire reported just after 10 a.m. on Friday.

CalFire has ordered two additional airtankers for a total of six. That is in addition to the 22 engines, 10 fire crews, eight water tenders, three bulldozers and two chief officers who already responded to the fire, for a total of 236 firefighters, reports CalFire.The tankers are from Ramona Airport and Riverside, said CalFire Capt. Mike Mohler.

The fire is off Highway 79 and Camino San Ignacio near Warner Springs. It was reported at 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, and was initially reported as 400 acres.

The fire is burning on the Los Coyote Indian Reservation in heavy brush with a moderate rate of spread, Mohler reported. Two cabins and numerous archeological sites were threatened, he said.

The fire is burning to the east, away from populated areas into steep and rugged terrain, said Mohler.

CalFire investigators are attempting to determine the cause of the fire.
