Representatives from Ramona’s Veterans of Foreign War Post 3783 presented four “Americanism” awards to two businessmen and to two governing boards in Ramona.

“We’re giving plaques to certain people who fly the American flag all the time,” said Dale Smith, who just finished two years as commander of the Ramona VFW.

Effective July 1, Smith is serving as a commander of the VFW’s district in San Diego.

Orrin Day, owner of the Promenade building, and Sean Leahy, owner of Cheers, received plaques for recognition of their prominent display of the U.S. flag.

On June 28, Smith presented the Americanism award to the Ramona Municipal Water District board of directors for the flag outside the district headquarters and to the San Diego Country Estates Homeowners Association Board for the display of the U.S. flag, along with other service flags at the San Vicente Golf Resort.

Marla Smith, Dale’s wife and senior vice of the VFW’s Ladies’ Auxiliary, said Americanism is a program of the VFW and the post wanted to compliment people in the community who show their patriotism.

A goal of the Americanism program is to ensure that the public will never forget the sacrifices made by America’s soldiers.
