School supply giveaway and barbecue are Friday

The community is invited to the 2011 Back to School Barbecue outside Main Street Roca church Friday, Aug. 12.

Barbecue festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with wristbands being distributed and and Ronald McDonald, The Talking Police Car and Remnant Youth Praise Team. A party jump, face painting and sheriff’s activities are planned. Participants will meet local authors, make a gospel bead bracelet and eat hot dogs and other refreshments.

Free backpacks and school supplies will be handed out at 7:30 p.m. to preschoolers through 12th-graders wearing a wristband. Depending on the amount of last-minute donations, organizers anticipate having enough supplies for 500 children.

Pastors Pablo and Jacquie Linares will welcome the community and introduce Carlos Nicasio of Remnant Youth Ministries. He has a powerful message for the Youth of Ramona and their families, said event coordinators. New this year, 300 Bibles will be given out courtesy of Scott Lee Rudge Construction.

In His Steps Recovery Home volunteers have been working for weeks so that every backpack will include a custom, hand-crafted bookmark with a special verse of scripture for the the students, said Stacey Rudge, co-coordinator of the back-to-school drive.
