Nine contestants will be in the limelight at the Ramona Rodeo Queen Pageant at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, 421 Aqua Lane, on Saturday, May 7. Five are vying for the 2011 senior queen crown and four for junior queen.
The day will begin with horsemanship at 9 a.m. in the Fred Grand Arena, followed by personal interviews with the judges and the evening pageant at 6 in the ROCC Pavilion.
Admission to the horsemanship demonstration is free. Admission to the evening pageant is $5.
Bellamia Salon, Spa and Boutique is pageant sponsor, and each contestant has a sponsor providing additional support.
“They’ve been working very hard,” Joani Georgeson, pageant director, said of the contestants, who have been meeting weekly. “We can’t go wrong with any of these girls. These girls are all amazing.”
Rather than being competitive, the contestants have been helping each other, noted Georgeson.
“They’ve been taking each other’s rollers out and fluffing their hair before each Wednesday practice,” she said, explaining that the contestants have to come to each Wednesday session as if they were going to the pageant. “That says a lot for these girls.”
Contestants vying for senior rodeo queen must be between 17 and 23 years old. Junior queen contestants are ages 14 to 16.
Senior queen contestants and their sponsors are Shelby Tomes, San Vicente Saddle Club; Sarah Baughman, Rock-N-River Ranch; Kayla Douglas, Chuck Lies; Lilienne Cullen, Subway of Ramona; and Deirdre Ryan, sponsor’s name unavailable.
Junior queen contestants and their sponsors are Alexis Awrey, Zeigler Suffolks of Ramona; Megan Buckley, Sports Photo Mojo; Jessica Phillips, Grandpa Jack; and Kilyaahwii Linton, Bryant Construction.
