The deadline for property owners to request a review of assessed values is April 29.
For the first time, assessment review applications may be submitted online at www.sdarcc.com.
The form is self explanatory and does not take a lot of knowledge about the law, only an understanding of the current market value of the home, said San Diego County Assessor Ernie Dronenburg.
Property values in San Diego County have been dropping in market value over the past couple of years and some property owners have submitted requests for review of their assessed value with the County Assessor’s Office.
Property owners who believe their property’s market value as of Jan. 1, 2011, has dropped below its current assessed value may file an application online to request the assessor to review their property’s assessment before this year’s bill is issued. As an indication of their current assessed value, an owner can reference the assessed value on their 2010-2011 tax bill.
The over 196,000 taxpayers who received a reduction last year don’t need to apply again this year as their assessed value of last year will automatically be reviewed, noted Dronenburg.
“If you are online challenged and would like the paper version of the application form, you can call our help number at the assessor’s office (858-505-6262) and a form will be sent to you by mail,” said Dronenburg. “However, don’t delay because the filing period closes April 29.”
All taxpayers who apply will be notified of the results of the assessor’s decision when the annual notices of values are mailed in July. Owners who disagree with the assessor’s decision may file a formal appeal with the county Assessment Appeals Board. This appeal should be sent to the Clerk of the Assessment Appeals Board, between July 2 and Nov. 30.
