Softball team ends season with 12-16

If the New York Yankees are the Bronx Bombers, then the Ramona High School softball team became the Blond Bombers in the final week of the regular season.

The Lady Dawgs ripped three home runs and belted 20 hits as they lost to Westview High School and beat Oceanside High School. The Lady Dawgs finished the regular season with a 12-16 record and completed Valley League action with a 6-6 record.

Ramona jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Westview High School and led 3-1 going into the final inning. Westview scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to come from behind to beat the Lady Dawgs. It was the final home game of the season for the Lady Bulldogs.

Ally Harvey pitched well as she gave up one earned run on and scattered five hits. She struck out two and only issued one base on balls.

Courtney Fick, KK Melgoza, Emily Vandervort, Julie Ward and Allie Ferguson all stroked singles in the game. Ferguson scored Ramona’s first run.

Enter the Blond Bombers. Tory Roberts hit her first home run of the season in the fourth inning, a shot over the leftfield fence. Roberts hit the first home run hit in the Lady Dawgs new field last season. The shot was a great way to punctuate Senior Day. Lexi Slater hit a solo shot in the fifth inning over the left center fence.

Slater continued to bomb against Oceanside High School on the road. The junior shortstop had three hits, a home run, single and a triple and five RBI and scored twice. Melgoza also delivered three hits with a double and an RBI. Fick had two hits, a double and an RBI. Ward contributed two hits and an RBI. Ferguson ripped a double and a single. Kim Whelehon had two singles and an RBI. Cassie Ford had a double and two RBIs.

Harvey went the distance and picked up the win. She gave up four earned runs and fanned four and did not issue a walk.

The Lady Dawgs finished on a bright note but did not get a playoff berth. Eight Lady Bulldogs earned Union Tribune All Academic honors. The scholar/athletes were: Kellsie Domnitz (3.06), Allie Ferguson (3.78), Courtney Fick (3.61), Cassie Ford (4.31), Tory Roberts (4.59), Hillary Roloff (4.27), Lexi Slater (3.50) and Angelina Uriostegui (3.65). The Lady Dawgs hit the books as hard as they hit the ball in the final week of the season.
