The Ramona High School tennis team has finished the team portion of its season and will now go on to individual tournaments. The Bulldogs finished their season with a 10-8 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF San Diego Section Division II team playoffs.

Ramona advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Mt. Miguel High School at Riviera Oaks Resort and Racquet Club 13-5.

Mt. Miguel is coached by a former RHS teacher and coach, Grant Martin.

Cameron Ruland had an excellent day as the number one singles player for RHS. Ruland went 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1. His set against Anthony Tran was a classic battle of power versus finesse. Tran is a big hitter and a big individual. Ruland uses his array of shots and agility to win. Ruland won the set 6-0.

Tyler McDonald won a valuable team point by going 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 and 1-6. Daniel Streeter won two sets with scores of 6-2, 3-6 and 6-2.

Ramona won 7 of 9 points in doubles play. Tyler Davidson and John Shupe won three sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-0. Garrett Hatch and Chris Bowersox picked up two team points by going 1-6, 6-4 and 6-0. Liam Swan and Chris Page won two sets with scores of 3-6, 6-3 and 6-1.

Ramona lost to Scripps Ranch in the quarterfinals 13-5 on the road.

“Tyler Davidson and John Shupe did really well by winning all three of their sets. Cameron Ruland also did well. He lost two close sets and won one set against opponents that beat him fairly easily two months ago. It is satisfying to see the improvement with this team,” said coach Doug Failla.

Seven varsity players with a 3.0 grade-point average or better earned San Diego Union-Tribune All Academic Certificates:seniors Chris Bowersox (4.17) and Tyler Davidson (3.41) and juniors Theodore Gallagher (3.48), Garrett Hatch (3.70), Andrew Rivera (3.20), Cameron Ruland (4.03) and Liam Swan (3.69).
