Bulldog spikers beat Ravens in quarterfinals

Ramona High School’s boys volleyball team improved its season record to 23-11 while advancing to the CIF Division III semifinals with a four-game win over Canyon Crest May 15 in the CIF quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs’ final home match of the season produced a 25-18, 28-26, 23-25, 25-19 victory at the Ravens’ expense.

“We did serve very solid. We kept pressure on with our serve,” said Ramona coach Jeff Klauda.

The two teams had faced each other March 26 during the pool play portion of the North County Invitational Tournament. Canyon Crest would end up winning the pool, beginning pool play with a 21-25, 25-23, 15-9 win over Ramona.

“It was our worst played game of the year,” said Klauda. “It was nice to be able to see them again.”

Ramona drew a first-round bye for the CIF Division III playoffs, so the May 15 match was the Bulldogs’ first in nine days.

“We weren’t playing aggressively,” Klauda said. “We were being too careful with the ball.”

Ramona’s lack of pace nearly cost the Bulldogs in the second game. Ramona had a significant lead, but the Ravens came back to lead the game and had game point before the Bulldogs staved off that situation and earned the victory. Canyon Crest led most of the third game, although Ramona tied the score at 23 points apiece before the Ravens scored the final two points.

Ramona had better success in the fourth and final game.

“We were serving tough,” Klauda said.

Ian Nowakowski led the team with 14 kills and also paced Ramona with five serving aces. Luis Nunez had two aces while Billy White had ten kills. Garrett Adelman’s 37 assists and 10 digs were team highs for the match while Garrett Vizcarra had four of the team’s 11 blocks.
