A series of events this month is building momentum for the 30th anniversary celebration of Ramona Rodeo.

In addition to the May 8 & 9 Ramona Bluegrass and Old West Festival, pre-rodeo events include the Ramona Rodeo Kickoff Open Barrel Racing Jackpot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 15, the 3rd Annual Cowgirl Fashion Show at 5:30 p.m. on May 15, and the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Mega Mixer presented by Santa Ysabel Casino at 5 p.m. on May 20.

May Days in Ramona will culminate in the three-day rodeo Friday through Sunday, May 21 through 23, featuring three professional rodeo shows, live boxing demonstrations from the ABC (Any Body Can) Youth Foundation, a free family dance featuring live country-rock music, Kids Day Sunday — a treat young cowgirls and cowboys look forward to each year — food, vendor booths galore and much more.

The Open Barrel Racing Jackpot, approved by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), is a “run for the cash and couture” with cowgirl fashion awards for division winners in the Open race and tickets to the evening kickoff party.

Competition will be in the Fred Grand Arena, 421 Aqua Lane. Details about the event are on page 11 and at ramonarodeo.com.

Kenrix Sushi & Co. is hosting the Cowgirl Fashion Show in the Seidl’s Party Pavilion. Limited seating is available, with tickets, at $10 each, available at Kenrix Sushi & Co. at 2330 Main St., Elston Hay & Grain at 2220 Main St., online at ramonarodeo.com, at 760-803-0761 and at the door.

The event starts with a cocktail party at 5:30 p.m. The “Pistols, Spurs & Pearls: What makes a Good Cowgirl!” fashion show at 7:30 p.m. will showcase clothing from Livery Feed & Supply, TresChic Clothing, Harlee’s Secret and Jewelry World. The evening concludes with a dance. All ages are welcome.

Also in the ROCC Pavilion, Ramona chamber’s mixer, hosted by Santa Ysabel Casino, will be at 5 p.m. on May 20. Admission is $5 for chamber members and $10 for others.
