Ramona High School’s girls swim team traveled to Westview High School on April 27 and improved its league and overall dual meet record to 5-1 with an 89-81 victory over the Wolverines.

“It was a fun meet to be a part of,” said Ramona coach Jolyn Yanez. “It was pretty exciting at the end.”

Ramona held a 79-77 lead entering the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Westview could have won the meet with first-place and third-place finishes and would have tied the meet with first-place and fourth-place finishes.

Ramona’s quartet of Lisse Litka-Baughman, Katherine Abbott, Brice Maruna and Breann Stevens won the race with a time of 3:51.13.

Westview’s relay team had a time of 3:51.34.

Litka-Baughman is a freshman and had never previously competed in a race with the meet on the line.

“She’s a competitive swimmer year-round, so she has an idea,” Yanez said of Litka-Baughman’s first such high school race.

Ramona’s “B” team of Ellie Carrano, Taylor Ford, Taylor Shinnick and Gina Lucas placed third in the race.

The Bulldogs took first place in seven of the 11 events against Westview. Stevens won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.06 seconds and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.96. Carrano had the fastest 50-yard freestyle time at 26.20 seconds. Litka-Baughman improved her personal record in the 500-yard freestyle to 5:29.23 while taking first place. Lucas won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.52. Ramona’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay team of Abbott, Carrano, Madi Lanz and Stevens took 1:44.64.

The Bulldogs are now preparing for the league meet. The preliminaries will take place May 14 and the finals will be contested May 15.

“We have a whole bunch of time to prepare,” Yanez said.
