Softball team picks up one win, two losses

Share

Ramona High’s softball team picked up its first win of the season and lost two games in week two of the season. Ramona is 1-5 as it heads into two tournaments that run simultaneously—the Falcon Fiesta and The North County Tournament—and prepares for Valley League action.

“We are improving and making progress,” said coach Mike Schuler. “We have been making costly mistakes that have cost us. As our younger players get used to varsity play and we play together, those mistakes will take care of themselves. We have to put the ball in play more consistently, but that has a lot to do with our schedule. We play tough teams with good pitchers in good tournaments to get ready for the Valley League.”

With Hillary Roloff on the injured list and Courtney Ferguson recovering from an injury, the Lady Bulldogs only have two seniors in the lineup and no seniors on the pitching staff.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to Patrick Henry High School 4-3 in the final game of pool play in the Cougar Classic.

Ally Harvey went the first three innings and pitched well as she gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits. She struck out one. Julie Ward finished the game and took the loss as she went three innings and gave up one unearned run on one hit as she fanned three.

Southern Utah bound Courtney Fick supplied all of the Ramona runs with a three-run home run in the fifth inning. KK Melgoza had one hit in four trips to the plate. Ward had a single and a double in four trips. Lexi Slater was 2-for-2 with a double and a single.

The Lady Dawgs lost a road game in the Falcon Fiesta to West Hills High School 5-3.

Kellsie Domnitz pitched the first three innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits. Harvey pitched the final three innings and did not give up a run as she struck out one.

Ramona jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first inning. Julie Ward reached first base on an error and Fick belted a two strike pitch for a home run.

Ramona scored its final run in the seventh inning. Kim Whelehon ripped a double to open the inning but was thrown out on by the left fielder. Tory Roberts hit the second double of the inning and scored on an error. Slater and Roloff also had hits for the Lady Dawgs in the game.

The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season and came out of an offensive slump as they pounded San Pasqual 15-6 in a come-from-behind victory in the opening game of the North County Tournament.

Domnitz went the distance and picked up the win. She pitched five innings and gave up six runs on eight hits. She struck out three.

Ramona’s hitting attack produced 15 hits. Six Bulldogs had multiple hits in the game. Melgoza collected three hits and drove in one run.

Slater, Fick, Roberts, Whelehon and Cassie Ford all collected two hits apiece. Fick and Roloff also contributed one hit each to the offense.

The deuces were wild for Roberts. The senior scored two runs, walked twice, hit a double and drove in two runs. Whelehon also had two RBIs. Ward, Slater, Fick, Ford and Roloff also drove in runs.

Ramona scored three runs in the top of the first inning using two double steals to score two runs and a Slater RBI. San Pasqual scored one run in the bottom of the frame.

Ramona scored a run in the third inning and the Eagles answered with two runs in the third and took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Ramona then scored 11 runs on eight hits in the fifth inning to ensure the win.
