Softball team starts season with three losses

Ramona High’s varsity girls softball team started the season in the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park. The Lady Dawgs lost to Mission Hills, Pt. Loma and El Camino High School in pool play.

In the season opener, Ramona took a 2-0 lead against Mission Hills High School after two and a half innings. The Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the third and took advantage of Ramona errors in the fourth inning to score 3 unearned runs. Ramona scored a solo run in the fifth inning. The final score was 4-3.

Lexi Slater drove in Tory Roberts with a double in the first inning to give Ramona a lead. Slater finished the game by going 1-for 2 and scored on run.

Roberts scored two runs and went 1-for-3. She also scored on an RBI by Cassie Ford. Courtney Fick finished the game with two hits in three trips and an RBI. KK Melgoza also delivered a hit for the Lady Dawgs.

Kellsie Domnitz got the start as pitcher and took the loss. The junior righthander went four innings and surrendered five hits, struck out one and was the victim of three unearned runs. Ally Harvey finished on the mound.

The game was called due to the 90-minute time limit.

Domnitz returned to the circle against Pt. Loma and pitched a gem in losing 1-0 to the Pointers. Limited the Pointers to two hits, she struck out six.

Pt. Loma opened the fourth inning with a solo home run and that was the difference in the game.

The Lady Dawgs outhit Pt. Loma 3-to-2 but could not score a run. Fick went 1-for-2. Ford turned in a 1-for-3 performance and Kim Whelehon got her first varsity hit going 1-for-2.

Julie Ward got her first varsity start in the circle and took the loss to a highly ranked El Camino Wildcat nine. Ward went four plus innings and gave up five earned runs on ten hits. Domnitz finished on the mound.

Emily Vandervort broke up a perfect game for her first varsity hit with a two out single in the third. Slater and Fick put up back-to-back hits in the fourth with two outs, but the Lady Dawgs could not score. Melgoza finished Ramona’s offense with a single in the sixth inning.

All CIF pitcher Natalie Amu was in command as she struck out 11 Lady Bulldogs.

The Ramona team will travel to Cardiff Sports Park for a doubleheader in the Falcon Festa on Saturday. Ramona plays Torrey Pines at 9 a.m. and Poway at 11 a.m.
