Water polo places four on all-league team

During the Valley League coaches’ meeting Feb. 22, four Ramona High School girls water polo players were selected for all-league honors.

Senior driver Taylor Shinnick was named to the Valley League’s first team, junior driver Angelina Uriostegui received second-team league honors, and honorable mention recognition was given to senior goalkeeper Shenoa Wilcox and senior two-meter defender Shelby Wilson.

“It’s really tough to get more than a couple of players,” Ramona coach Donnie Williams said of placing players on the first or second teams for the seven-team league.

Ramona finished Valley League play with a 7-5 record, giving the Bulldogs third place in the conference standings. Including a first-round playoff loss to Cathedral Catholic, Ramona finished the season with an overall mark of 15-15.

Shinnick, who spent three years on the Bulldogs’ varsity team, was Ramona’s only returning starter from the 2008-09 season.

“I’m happy for Taylor,” Williams said. “She worked hard.”

Williams also acknowledged Shinnick’s leadership.

“She was a great team captain for us,” he said.

Shinnick is one of seven seniors Williams will lose, but five varsity players are expected to return.

“They see how Taylor got better, so they’re going to be doing a little bit more,” Williams said of Shinnick’s off-season activity.

Uriostegui spent most of 2008-09 on Ramona’s junior varsity but saw some varsity action.

“Looking forward to her stepping up and taking a bigger leadership role,” Williams said of his only junior all-league selection.

Wilcox made her varsity debut this season.

“She just kept getting better every day,” Williams said.

Wilson had not played on the varsity prior to 2009-10.

“Did a good job of defending some of the bigger girls,” Williams said.

Assuming that the CIF Board of Managers approves the North County Conference realignment in April, Ramona will be in the Palomar League for 2010-11 along with Mount Carmel, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Torrey Pines, and Westview.
