Ramona teams face stiffer competition in Palomar League
Ramona High School’s athletic program had the seventh best winning percentage in league play of the 19 schools playing varsity sports in the North County Conference.
The statistics were based on how the teams participating in the Avocado, Palomar and Valley leagues faired in league action.
Ramona had the third best winning percentage in the Valley League behind Mt. Carmel and Westview and bettered the records of Valley Center, San Marcos, Oceanside and Orange Glen. Orange Glen had the worst percentage in the NCC going 21-183-1 for a .103 percentage. Orange Glen’s refusal to play traditional rivals Escondido and San Pasqual in football was one of the major reasons for the re-leaguing. The administrators in the NCC wanted to preserve “natural rivalries” to earn more money at the gate in football.
Ramona’s overall record (boys and girls combined) was 122-95-5 a .562 winning percentage. Ramona had the third best record in the Valley League behind Mt. Carmel and Westview. Ramona finished ahead of Valley Center (.451), San Marcos (.440), Oceanside (.343) and Orange Glen (.103).
Torrey Pines (first .860), Mt. Carmel (second .786), Poway (fourth.695), Westview (fifth .673) and Rancho Bernardo (sixth .599) all finished ahead of the Bulldogs. Those teams will make up the Palomar League,, which Ramona is entering next school year. Mt. Carmel will not compete in the Palomar League in football but will compete in all other sports.
The Bulldogs’ boys’ teams had the sixth best winning percentage in the NCC. The Dawgs went 74-40-0 for a .649 winning percentage. Only one Valley League school had a better percentage. Mt. Carmel turned in a .696. The Dawgs finished ahead of Westview (.630), San Marcos (.441), Valley Center (.384), Oceanside (.325) and Orange Glen (.178).
Four of the five teams with better winning averages than the Bulldogs will all be in the Palomar League next season. Torrey Pines turned in the best record with a .837. Mt. Carmel had the third best record. Poway was fourth with .689 and Rancho Bernardo finished in fifth with a .670.
The Lady Bulldogs’ athletic teams came in 12th out of the 19 schools in the NCC. The Lady Dawgs went 48-55-5 in league contests for a .466 winning percentage. They had the fourth best winning percentage in the Valley League.
Mt. Carmel had the best record in the Valley League and the second best record overall with .872. Westview (.712) and Valley Center (.509) also finished ahead of the Lady Bulldogs. Westview had the third best record overall. Ramona finished ahead of San Marcos (.439), Oceanside (.357) and Orange Glen (3-100-0, .029)
Torrey Pines had the best record in the NCC with a .883. Torrey Pines, Mt. Carmel, Westview, Poway (.702) and Rancho Bernardo (.578) all finished above Ramona in the standings and all will be in the Palomar League next season.
Ramona won two Valley League championships in 2009-10. The Dawgs won pennants in baseball and boys golf. Ramona won two CIF championships: girls volleyball and boys track. Torrey Pines won 14 league titles and six section titles to lead the NCC.
As the records show, Ramona will be facing stiffer competition in the Palomar League. Based on the 2009-10 records the Palomar League will be the best league in the newly realigned NCC. The 2009-10 school year ends Ramona’s tenure in the Valley League. The 2010-2011 school year will be Ramona’s first year in the Palomar League after stints in recent years in the Mountain, Coastal, Avocado East, Avocado and Valley leagues.
