Few file as candidates in November election

Share

Unless more Ramona residents file as candidates in the Nov. 2 general election, voters will not be casting ballots for Ramona water board, school board and planning group.

The deadline to file is Aug. 6. As of Tuesday morning, only one person had filed for a seat on each of the three boards.

Rodger Dohm, completing his first four-year term on the school board, is seeking re-election. He is serving his second year as school board president.

The terms of two other school board members—Luan Burman Rivera and Bob Stoody—end this year. Neither has yet filed, according to the county registrar’s office.

On the Ramona Community Planning Group, only incumbent Dennis Sprong has filed. Seven of the 15 seats on the group are up for re-election.

Water board directors are elected by division with specific boundaries, meaning only voters within each division’s geographic boundaries can vote. Division 2 and 4 seats now held by, respectively, George Boggs and Jim Robinson, will be on the ballot if other candidates file.

Boggs has filed, and Robinson said Tuesday he is completing the paperwork to file for re-election. Boggs, appointed to fill the Division 2 seat when Doug Wilsman resigned for health reasons, is completing his first term on the board. Robinson is completing his fourth four-year term on the five-member board.

If incumbents fail to file for re-election by Aug. 6, the county grants a five-day extension, until Aug. 11, for other residents to file as candidates.

Election information is available on the web at www.sdcounty.ca.gov/voters/Eng/Eindex.shtml, by telephone at 858-565-5800, and in person at the registrar’s office at 5201 Ruffin Road, Suite I, San Diego.
