Smith served 26 years in the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Force as a sonar technician, retiring as a master chief petty officer.

In addition to serving as Ramona VFW commander, Smith is senior vice commander for VFW District 1 in San Diego County. With 30 VFW Posts, District 1 is the largest VFW District in the United States. In the VFW 2011-12 year, Smith will serve as the commander of District 1.

A Ramona resident for 13 years, Smith is married to the former Marla Gideon. They live on their DaleMar Ranch on the west side of Ramona and are hosts to the post’s semiannual pig roast barbecues open to the public at their ranch to raise money for the Ramona post. The next barbecue, which features live music and all-you-can-eat food and drink, will be on Oct. 2 from 1 to 10 p.m.

VFW Post 3783 at 2247 Kelly St. has 568 members. Smith was elected last year and re-elected this year by a vote of the membership.

In addition to its members who are veterans of foreign wars, the post has a ladies auxiliary with about 200 members. A men’s auxiliary, which started a year ago, has 46 members.
