The latest buzz at the Grange is bees

If bees, the smallest backyard livestock, interest you, make a “beeline” to the Ramona Grange Hall at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 24.

“Honey From Your Backyard” is the second in the series of backyard agriculture workshops at the Ramona Grange Hall. This is a beginner’s class in beekeeping. Beckey Smith, of Beckey’s Bees is the instructor.

A Ramona beekeeper and resident, Smith has worked with the Ramona Valley 4-H Bee group. The 4-H youngsters will be assisting her at the workshop.

Some of the topics to be covered are the history of bees, equipment needed, rules and regulations, planting to attract bees, Africanized bees and bee rescue. Health, safety and humane treatment will be emphasized. Honey will be available.

All are invited to bring their questions and families and “bee” there for an introduction to the fascinating world of bees.

Suggested donations for the workshop are: Adults, $10, and families of two adults and children, $15. Active military and their family are free. Children under age 16 are welcome and free, but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Ramona Grange Hall is at 215 Seventh St.
