Staying cool at Ramona Community Pool

By Pixie Sulser

Keeping cool in the summer heat is as close as Ramona High School, where the Bulldog swimming pool is open to the public from June to the beginning of August.

The community is welcome to swim from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. There is a charge of $3 per person. However, families planning to make the pool a regular hangout may pay a flat fee of $120 for a summer pass for the entire family (immediate family only).

“Families can come and just enjoy being a family,” said lifeguard Brice Maruna. “The pool offers great family time.”

There are trained lifeguards on duty at all times. Each lifeguard is certified in CPR, first aid, AED and water safety skills.

Swimming lessons for preschool through age 14 are also available at the pool through the Floaties Swim School. Participants are instructed in a stations system that maintains an overall coach to swimmer ratio of 1:2 for preschool and 1:4 for school age stations. The program offers a flexible monthly schedule to accommodate summer activities so participants are not required to maintain a strict class schedule.

Classes are offered five days a week and at various times throughout the day. Two sessions are offered. The first started June 21 and concludes July 16, and the second is from July 19 to Aug. 13. The cost is $11 to $13 per 30-minute lesson. Diving lessons are available at the same rate per 30-minute session.

Class times for the Floaties Swim School and registration forms may be picked up at the community pool at Ramona High during regular community hours of 1 to 4 p.m.

Swimming is one of the best ways to exercise because it works more muscles than just about any other water sport, according to Kidsexercise.com. With an increase in childhood obesity in recent years, swimming is considered a great way to get kids—and adults—moving.

Swimmers desiring to do a bit of exercise at Ramona Community Pool may request lane lines be set up so their workout is not disturbed, said Maruna.
