The road was not kind to Ramona High’s girls varsity team. The weather cost the Lady Dawgs a possible win at Valley Center, and Westview High School beat them in the Wolverines’ gym.
Ramona’s league record is 2-2 and the teaam is 9-10 on the year.
“I knew that it was going to be one of those nights when the game was postponed because the lights went out,” said Ramona coach Erin O’Connor.
The lights went out just before tipoff and it took about 45 minutes to get them back on.
When play started, Ramona jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 6-4 early in the second period. Then a leak in the roof caused a water puddle on the court and the officials suspended the game.
The game started on time at Westview High School and the Wolverines jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter advantage. Ramona found its offense in the second period and trailed 32-15 at intermission.
Both teams played almost evenly in the third period and Ramona trailed 42-23 going into the final eight minutes.
Ramona rallied and outscored the Wolverines 21-16 in the final period, but it was not enough to overcome the Westview lead.
Kellie Schoepp returned to action and just missed a double double. She led Ramona with 9 points and hauled down ten rebounds and dished off four assists.
Tori Sheppard hit one 3-point goal and scored 8 points. Paige Conroy scored 8 points and sunk one shot from beyond the arch. Courtney Robinson scored 6 points and grabbed five boards. Felicia Stead (5), RaeAnne Van Tol (4), Tessa Balcom (2) and Kim Whelehon (2) also scored for Ramona. Balcom contributed four assists and had three steals on defense.
Westview is undefeated in league play. Mt. Carmel is in second place with a 3-1 mark and Ramona is in third place. Ramona will need help to catch the Wolverines, but they control their own destiny in the race for second place and a favorable playoff berth.
