Girls basketball continues to dominate

Ramona High’s girls varsity basketball team beat Orange Glen on the road 52-27 in Valley League action that improved their league mark to 2-1.

“We continue to improve and we are playing well as a team,” said varsity coach Erin O’Connor.

Ramona took control of the game in the first period as the team outscored the Patriots 17-8. The Lady Dawgs continued to dominate and led 34-14 at intermission.

Ramona played relentless defense the entire game and the Pats never scored in double digits in any quarter of the game. Ramona forced multiple turnovers and converted several turnovers into points.

Four Lady Dawgs combined for 10 steals. RaeAnne Van Tol and Courtney Robinson grabbed three steals apiece. Paige Conroy and Tessa Balcom both had two thefts.

On offense, every Lady Bulldog who suited up scored. Kellie Schoepp did not play due to an ankle injury. She is expected back this week.

Van Tol had a monster game. The sophomore post player turned in a double as she dominated the boards at both ends of the court. She scored 10 points, all in the paint, and grabbed 13 rebounds. S. Robinson scored 9 points and hauled in six rebounds. Conroy also had six boards and scored 7 points.

Tori Sheppard scored 2 points and contributed three assists to the offense. Tessa Balcom scored 6 points and blocked a shot. Other scores included Jessica Beam (2), Felisha Stead (2), Kim Whelehon (3), Megan Buckley (2), and Christie Flores (6).

“We played well on defense and we are starting to understand the offense much better,” said O’Connor. “I am very pleased with our progress and with the effort every member of the team is giving.”

The Lady Dawgs drew a bye on the schedule on Friday, which means that the players get a night off and the coaches go out and scout.
