“Even the greenest horse has something to teach the wisest rider.” —Unknown

Happy New Year! 2010 is upon us, with anticipation of spring already in the wings. The new year will bring equestrian opportunities for camping, trail rides, poker runs and just general good fun for everyone.

I would like to extend a thank you to the equestrian community in a different way. This column is for you. I would like to know what you would like to see here as the months go by.

Take time to fill out the form on page 11 and mail it in. A drawing will be held from all the complete entries received, and a bucket of goodies from local merchants will go to the name selected as a thank you for your input for future columns. No purchase is necessary, but we do ask that the form be filled out in its entirety with at least one suggestion and/or request for story ideas, people to interview or places to visit in regards to the equestrian events in and around Ramona.

Entries must be received by Feb 1. The drawing to be held no later than Feb 5. Winner will be notified by phone and/or e-mail.

The

Aspin Winter Classic

is back. In its fifth year, the roster has grown to more than 40 riders. The 2009 barrel racing jackpots boasted in excess of 60 entries in what has become a much anticipated event in Ramona.

Aspin Classic co-founders are Jeannie Malone and Vanessa Aspin. Originally developed for younger riders, the Ramona Junior Jackpot Series was held at the Aspin arena. Though a great success, many entrants outgrew the format, said Malone.

“We modified it to the Aspin Winter Classic and changed the point structure so we could offer a saddle as the award for the All-Around winner,” she said.

The winner is determined through the high point of combined open barrel racing and open pole bending. The classic is open to anyone who wishes to participate, but series membership is required if one wishes to be eligible for the end-of-season awards.

Anyone interested in competing in the 2010 Aspin Classic is invited to contact Malone at 619-507-0507 or Aspin at 760-789-8474.

The

Rainbow Riders

women’e preformance drill team (aka “Blue Angels on Horseback”) began the new practice season on Jan 5. A New Year’s party is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 16. Contact Dottie Pierce at 760-788-4594 or visit the drill team’s Web site at www.rainbowridersdrillteam.com for more information.

More information about 2010 equestrian shows and events will be posted as information becomes available.
