A 57-year-old Ramona woman died of a complication from brain swelling yesterday after being struck by a truck she had walked in front of on state Route 67 about 200 feet south of Kalbaugh Street on Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to the medical examiner’s office, Vicki Selby died in Palomar Medical Center as the result of a closed head injury and a subdural hematoma early Thursday afternoon.

Selby was attempting to cross SR-67 from the west to the east side about 6:20 p.m. when she walked directly in front of a northbound Dodge Ram 250 traveling about 40 mph, said CHP Officer Brian Pennings. Sabrina Suarez, 45, was unable to stop her vehicle and the left front of the truck struck the pedestrian, reported Pennings.

When Selby was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Escondido, she was alert and conscious and had an injury to her right ankle, said Pennings.

There is evidence Selby had been drinking before the collision and alcohol may have been a factor, reported the CHP. Suarez was uninjured.

Selby was divorced and lived with her daughter in an apartment in Ramona, reported the medical examiner’s office.
