Girls swim beats Knights, wins two classes at Ironman Relays
Ramona High School’s girls swim team improved its dual meet record in Valley League competition and overall for the season to 4-1 with a 112-58 victory April 20 at home against San Marcos. The team then won two divisions at the Ironman Relays and set two meet records during the April 24 meet at Del Norte High School.
“I’m just feeling really confident,” said Ramona coach Jolyn Yanez. “They’re starting to realize how their hard work is paying off.”
The San Marcos girls swim team includes Nicole Parmenter, who is the two-time defending CIF champion in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. Parmenter won both of those events in the meet against Ramona while the Bulldogs took first place in the other nine races.
Lisse Litka-Baughman won two individual races, completing the 100-yard freestyle in 57.06 seconds and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:42.45. Madi Lanz had a time of 26.15 seconds to win the 50-yard freestyle, Breann Stevens took 2:01.56 in the 200-yard freestyle race she won, Katherine Abbott’s time of 2:27.42 gave her first place in the 200-yard individual medley, and Gina Lucas had the fastest 100-yard breaststroke time at 1:10.89.
Lucas, Abbott, Stevens and Lanz won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:59.34. Brice Maruna, Abbott, Lanz and Litka-Baughman had a winning time of 1:49.91 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Maruna, Stevens, Litka-Baughman and Lucas required 3:58.51 to win the 400-yard freestyle relay race.
Because the Ironman Relays includes co-ed events, the overall score covers both boys and girls events and the Bulldogs placed seventh. Divisions are based on gender, number of swimmers in each race, and distance in each race. Ramona’s girls won both the Two Maiden division and the Iron Maiden division.
Ramona won three of the four 2x50 Two Maiden races while finishing third in the other race and setting two meet records in that class.
“They did awesome,” Yanez said.
Litka-Baughman and Lucas swam the 100-yard backstroke in 57.81 seconds to break the meet record of 57.90 seconds which had been held by La Costa Canyon. Lanz and Lucas took 55.13 seconds to win the 100-yard butterfly, breaking Ramona’s 2008 record of 56.09 seconds set by Lanz and Abbott by nearly a second.
“I’ve got some pretty stellar kids,” Yanez said.
Carrano and Stevens won the 100-yard freestyle race in 51.50 seconds. Abbott and Sydney Davison placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.22.
The Iron Maiden class involves two girls alternating 50-yard stints for a total race of 200 yards. Litka-Baughman and Lucas won the backstroke race with a time of 2:01.22. Ellie Carrano and Abbott were second in the medley relay at 2:09.78 and Davison and Lanz placed third in the breaststroke with a time of 2:28.58.
Ramona also placed fifth in the butterfly and sixth in the freestyle.
Carrano and Collin Torsak added a Ramona win in the co-ed 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Bulldogs’ final home meet of the season will take place May 4 against Oceanside.
